Evolução histórico-formal da Igreja de São Pedro, Elvas

Abstract

A dissertação consiste numa análise histórica e morfológica da Igreja de São Pedro, em Elvas. Do século XIII, o edifício conheceu vários períodos de intervenção, tendo passado de torre de muralha islâmica a igreja cristã. A sua atual função foi definida no período de transição entre o domínio árabe e a reconquista cristã, altura em que surge como cabeça de uma das quatro paróquias criadas à data da sua fundação e que organizavam a cidade de Elvas então. Esta proposta visa a compreensão do conjunto edificado, tendo como objetivo refletir o seu percurso históricoconstrutivo, procurando atualizar o estado do conhecimento sobre o objeto, de modo a que possa ser ferramenta útil para futuras intervenções, conscientes do seu valor patrimonial. Paralelamente ao levantamento do caso de estudo, e respetiva análise da implantação, forma e influências artísticas, procedeu-se à interpretação de cada fase construtiva e a contextualização das mesmas. A pesquisa bibliográfica possibilitou a reconstituição cronológica das diferentes fases de intervenção do objeto, sua inserção urbana e valor patrimonial. Esta investigação procura também alertar para o reconhecimento do património edificado, e seu valor, contribuindo para o enriquecimento, em contexto regional e nacional, da historiografia da arquitetura.

This dissertation consists on an historical and morphological analysis of Saint Peter’s Church, in Elvas. From the XIIIth century, this building has known several periods of architectural intervention, it went from a tower that belonged to the islamic wall of the city to a christian church. Its current program was defined on the transition period between the arab dominion and the christian reconquest, a time when this particular object emerges as the head church of one of the four parishes that were created then and which allowed the organization of Elvas.This thesis aims to comprehend the building and its annexes, and has as it’s main goal not only to reflect on its historical and constructive narrative, seeking to update the state of knowledge about the object, so that it can be a useful tool for future interventions, aware of its patrimonial value. In parallel with the survey of Saint Petter’s Church, and the analysis of its placement, form and artistic influences, an interpretation of each constructive phase, and respective context, was made. The bibliographic reasearch allowed the chronologic reconstitution of the different phases of intervention on the architectonic object, its urban setting and cultural value. This investigation intends to acknowledge the arquitectonic heritage, and its value, contribuiting to the enrichment, on a regional and national context, of architectural historiography.
