Lugares e escalas de um núcleo piscatório: as casas de Vila Chã

Abstract

A evolução urbana reflete sempre o confronto entre as novas formas de habitar e construir e as antigas práticas fortemente vinculadas às características de cada lugar. Com a presente investigação pretende-se contribuir para que o processo de transformação imprescindível a qualquer lugar possa coexistir com a preservação de qualidades sociais, arquitetónicas e urbanas provenientes de um tempo longo. A partir da análise de um território específico procura-se contribuir de forma rigorosa para o reconhecimento e valorização de um conjunto urbano cuja a identidade é indissociável de relações estabelecidas entre a terra e o mar. A pesca, o sargaço, a agricultura, a emigração, a família, a mulher e a forma de construir constituem importantes temas a partir dos quais se descodifica um modo de vida partilhado e se constrói a memória coletiva. A investigação suporta-se em 3 níveis de aproximação. O primeiro nível de aproximação centra-se na ideia de território, em que a análise é feita até aos limites de Vila Chã, podendo pontualmente estender-se às freguesias e municípios vizinhos, de forma a caracterizar as relações existentes entre espaços, por vezes distantes, mas profundamente comprometivos com o quotidiano e com as rotinas da população. Num segundo nível de aproximação, é retratado a ideia de bairro, na qual é infatizada a imagem de uma vida em comunidade suportada por um conjunto de espaços e funções de proximidade - a casa é complementada por espaços e processos que em Vila Chã fazem parte do espaço público. O terceiro nível de aproximação desenvolvido foca-se na ideia da casa, que permite perceber como a forma de construir e de ocupar o espaço mais íntimo, associado às atividades marítimas, como se de um refúgio se tratasse, reflete na sua organização o quotidiano de labor dos pescadores, assim como permite pensar a relação entre o espaço e o seu estilo de vida. Os três níveis de aproximação correspondem a um processo que se estende do geral ao particular, apesar de, inevitavelmente, existirem muitos cruzamentos/sobreposições que foram descobertas, durante a investigação, devido à vivência direta e prolongada dos lugares em estudo. Acima de tudo, estes três níveis de leitura permitem organizar a comunicação de uma realidade que é complexa e na qual tudo se relaciona, facilitando a descrição de alguns fatores que promoveram profundas transformações na comunidade de Vila Chã e, consequentemente, no seu desenvolvimento urbano. Com a elaboração de uma dissertação no âmbito de uma comunidade piscatória pretendeu-se descrever um lugar, no qual sobrevivem pessoas e espaços que constituem um património distinto daquele que resulta da crescente transformação da orla costeira em espaços de lazer e/ou turismo. Não se espera que a investigação venha a alterar, profundamente, aquela que tem sido a transformação destes lugares, embora deixe algumas descobertas sobre realidades que podem informar futuras transformações. A proteção deste lugar e desta comunidade justifica-se pela necessidade de presevar uma forma de viver em sociedade e de ocupar um espaço que é distinta daquela que hoje é dominante.

Urban evolution always reflects the confrontation between new ways of living and building and the old practices that are bound to the characteristics of each location. This research aims to contribute to the indispensable transformation process on any location so that it may coexist with the preservation of social, architectural and urban qualities that have been present for a long time. From analyzing a specific territory, we intend to contribute rigorously to the acknowledgment and appreciation of an urban setting whose identity is inseparable from relations established between the earth and the sea. Fishing, seagrass, agriculture, emigration, the family, women, and the way of building form important themes through which a shared way of life is decoded, and the collective memory is constructed. The investigation is based on 3 levels of approximation. The first level of approximation is centered on the notion of territory, where the analysis is made all the way to the borders of Vila Chã, with the possibility of extending it to neighboring parishes and municipalities, in order to characterize the existing relations between spaces, often distant but profoundly committed to the daily lives and routines of the population.On a second level of approximation, the notion of neighborhood is portrayed and emphasized by the image of life in a community supported by a set of spaces and functions of proximity – the house is complemented by spaces and processes that are part of the public space in Vila Chã. The third level of approximation focuses on the notion of home, which allows us to understand how the way of building and occupying the most intimate space, associated with maritime activities, as if it was a refuge, reflects in its organization the daily work life of the fishermen, and it also allows us to think of the relation between the space and their lifestyle. The three levels of approximation correspond to a process that extends from the general to the particular, despite there being – inevitably – many intersections/overlaps that have been discovered during the investigation, due to the direct and prolonged experience of the locations under study. Above all, these three levels of analysis allow us to organize the communication of a reality which is complex and in which everything is related, which makes it easier to describe some factors that have caused deep transformations in the community of Vila Chã and, consequently, in its urban development. With the elaboration of a dissertation within the scope of a piscatory community, it was intended to describe a place in which the people and spaces that constitute the distinct heritage that has resulted in the growing transformation of the coastal area in spaces of leisure/tourism survive. It isn’t expected for the investigation to profoundly change that which has been the transformation of these locations, although it leaves some insight on realities which can inform future transformations. The protection of this location and this community is justified by the need to preserve a way of living in a society and occupying a space that is distinct from that which is predominant today.
