The roulette of vaccines: a didactic resource to approach Global Inequalities in Health Care Access with children

Abstract

There are still millions of people with no access to health care. Introducing this issue in education from the earliest years of schooling can contribute to raising public awareness about it and inspire actions to achieve sustainable development goals, namely the SDG 3. To inspire teachers to do this, and aiming to make children feel what lack of healthcare access is like, and consequently to reflect on global inequalities on health care access, a board game was created. To assess its feasibility, this pedagogical resource was tested and discussed with teachers and educators involved in Global Citizenship Education. Results showed that it is feasible, it is adequate in familiarising children with the issue, it allows the achievement of the desired objectives, and it is adaptable for different ages and different contexts, both formal and informal, and in different countries. In addition, some of the participants considered that it could be adapted to other sustainable development issues like the access to clean water and access to education.
