Do romance vitoriano [ao romance] pós-moderno: reescrita e problematização do feminino em A. S. Byatt

Abstract

O objecto de estudo desta dissertação é a obra literária da escritora inglesa A. S. Byatt, fazendo-se um enfoque, como é sugerido pelo subtítulo, no modo como esta revela uma preocupação com o feminino, o que tem sido muitas vezes subvalorizado em algumas apreciações críticas desta escritora. O outro enfoque fundamental desta dissertação é o modo como a obra de Byatt demonstra uma continuidade histórica, tentando fazer uma ligação do presente ao passado vitoriano, nomeadamente, através de uma reescrita da sua história e da sua cultura em narrativas que lhe valeram o epíteto de "vitoriana pós-¬moderna". Nesse sentido, sugere-se o entendimento da obra ficcional desta escritora através da sua categorização como pós-modernista. Tendo em conta estes dois enfoques da dissertação, procede-se, nos dois capítulos iniciais, à definição de alguns conceitos teóricos, que nos parecem essenciais para uma melhor compreensão da tese que aqui se propõe. Trata-se de conceitos, por um lado, no âmbito do pós-modernismo a que os romances em questão se encontram associados e, por outro, no âmbito da crítica e teoria feministas, o que nos permitirá abordar a representação do feminino que neles é levada a cabo. Uma vez que nesta dissertação é dado maior relevo àquelas narrativas que melhor exemplificam a continuidade acima referida entre presente e passado, nomeadamente, o romance Possession: A Romance (1990) e as novelas de Angels and Insects (1994), não poderíamos, no entanto, evitar uma abordagem mais alargada da generalidade da obra desta escritora, no sentido de tentar perceber o modo como aí se questiona e problematiza o feminino. Assim, analisam-se outras obras de A. S. Byatt, onde é perceptível um enfoque no feminino, no sentido de lançar alguma luz sobre o modo como a sua obra o reescreve, pondo em relevo uma recorrente concepção do feminino, e do feminismo, num sentido mais moderno do que pós-moderno. Nos capítulos finais, o enfoque recai sobre a forma como a obra ficcional de Byatt reescreve a época vitoriana, forçando-nos, contudo, a olhar essa época mais através da semelhança do que da diferença em relação à pós-modernidade actual Pretende-se, assim, problematizar os conceitos de pós-modernismo e de pós¬-modernidade através da visão crítica da própria autora sobre o assunto e, por outro lado, pretende-se ligar esta visão crítica sobre o pós-modernismo à sua concepção do feminino, que, tal como fica aqui sugerido, estará bem mais perto de uma concepção moderna da mulher na sociedade.

The object of this dissertation is the fictional work of the British writer A. S. Byatt, focusing on the way it demonstrates a preoccupation with the feminine, which has been overlooked in some of the critical work that has been devoted to the author. The other point of departure of this dissertation 1s the way Byatt's fiction reveals a sense of historical continuity, in an attempt to make a bridge between the present and the Victorian past, namely, by rewriting its history and culture in narratives which have won her the title of "Postmodern Victorian". In that sense, we propose to focus on her fictional work from the perspective of postmodernism .and postmoderm writing. Taking into account both these aspects of this dissertation, the two introductory chapters try to define some theoretical concepts which are essential to the understanding of the thesis here proposed. These concepts have to do, on the one hand, with postmodernism, to which the novels that will be analysed are usually associated and, on the other hand, with feminist criticism and theory, which will allow for the analysis of the feminine in A. S. Byatt's novels. In this dissertation the focus will be on the fiction that best exemplifies the above mentioned continuity between past and present, namely Possession: A Romance (1990) and the novellas of Angels and Insects (1994); however, we could not help undertaking an analysis of a larger extension of A. S. Byatt's work, so as to try to understand the way the feminine is questioned in the generality of her fiction. Thus, we analyse other works by A. S. Byatt, where we can perceive a focus on the feminine, so that we can better understand the way her work rewrites it, stressing a recurring conception of the feminine, and of feminism, as modern rather than postmodern. In the two final chapters there is a focus on the way Byatt's fiction rewrites the Victorian era, enabling a view of this era through 1ts similarities with the postmodem contemporary world more than through its differences. We aim at questioning the concepts of postmodernism and postmodernity through Byatt's own critical vision on the issue; on the other hand, we aim at making the link between that critical vision about postmodernism to her conception of the feminine, which, as is suggested here, is closer to a modern conception of women in society.
