The wattle and daub is a technique that uses environmentally friendly materials with low CO2 and consumption and can be considered a good example of sustainable construction. This is composed of a wooden structure coated by a earth-based filler. The maintenance and rehabilitation of this type of old constructions are a great contribution to the valorization of the built heritage. The present study is motivated by the lack of information about the behavior of wattle and daub walls with earth-based mortars. With the lack of this information, most or practically all rehabilitation interventions result in the demolition and replacement of these walls by more current materials today. In this way, it is considered necessary to demystify the use of the traditional partition wall and to contribute to its rehabilitation becoming current practice. The main objective of this work is, therefore, to study the coating / filling mortar based on earth and lime for partition walls, characterizing them in order to promote their rehabilitation with quality. In this context, mechanical strength tests and water absorption tests were carried out by capillarity and by immersion, and in the last phase panels were constructed to study the best mixture with adhesion, erosion and water absorption with Karsten tubes tests. For the realization of the different mixtures were used materials such as: clay, from Guimarães; quicklime; hydrated lime; natural hydraulic lime; and used vegetable oil, provided by the university canteen. Finally, it should be emphasized that studies and bibliographies concerning the partition are scarce, and their regulations and norms are non-existent. As such this dissertation is motivated to counteract this trend and find a response to the incentive not only for rehabilitation but also for new constructions. |
