Assuming that the human being is today a geological force capable of making profound changes to the Earth-system that can jeopardise its own existence, it is crucial to understand whether this unprecedented geo-civilisational situation implies or may imply a new look at the theories of human well-being. In order to establish a conceptual framework for defining human well-being, we analyse its three main approaches: the hedonistic theory, with a focus on the utilitarianism of Bentham and Mill; the informed preference-satisfaction/desire theory; and the objective list theory. In a complementary perspective, we discuss two alternatives to the current model of economic development which seek to offer an adequate response to the changes caused by the Anthropocene: the Economy of Degrowth, which has Serge Latouche as its foremost advocate, and the Donut Economy, proposed by Kate Raworth. The main objective of the research will be to assess whether the leading theories on wellbeing, widely studied in political philosophy, accommodate these new models of economic development or whether, on the contrary, it will be necessary to build a new approach that incorporates the current paradigm - either through modifications to current theories or the creation of a new one. The compass that will guide the research will be the Planetary Boundaries Model developed by the Stockholm Resilience Center. |
