This dissertation presents the results of a study of the anthropomorphic images found in the mobile rock art collection found during the excavation of the fortified settlements of Castelinho and Crestelos in the Sabor Valley. Between these two sites, 25 schist slabs containing 39 engraved anthropomorphs, mostly figures on horseback, were discovered. The analysis of the human figures allowed us to understand that we are dealing with representations associated with equestrian elites, who used the representations of their ancestors and horses, prestigious and valuable animals, to legitimise their power. These elites normally appear within the context of a hunt, be it for boar, deer, wolf or fox and mainly wield throwing weapons such as spears or javelins. Therefore, it is very likely that they are typical scenes of agro-pastoral communities. On the other hand, the study of the contexts can also allow us to consider that we are dealing with religious-symbolic sites, in which foundational, apotropaic and sacramental rituals associated with the sites’ walls, as well as the storage structures within, were practiced. The analysis of the contexts, the iconographic parallels, the weaponry and the narratives portrayed in the images suggest that the human representations on mobile supports from the Late Iron Age found in the Sabor Valley, date more concretely to between the 4th and the 1st century BC. The conclusions presented here are not definitive, and will be refuted or confirmed in the future through the further study of the engravings from Castelinho and Crestelos. In total, 625 engravings on mobile supports were discovered, making the Sabor Valley the area of the Iberian Peninsula in which more pieces of this type were discovered.
