Resumo(s)The relationship between materials and technology in the built environment functional rehabilitation can present at least three kinds of strategies: neo-vernacular (reuse of conventional materials and technologies); low-tech (new materials versus traditional technologies and traditional materials versus new technologies) and high-tech (new materials and technologies). This special issue will focus on the emerging technologies and concepts applicable to the functional rehabilitation of existing buildings and urban landscapes but it is also intended to reflect on the appropriateness of traditional technologies. The functional rehabilitation of buildings and urban landscapes may include a very broad spectrum of topics, including: lighting; active and passive solar strategies; bioclimatic design; energy efficiency; hygrothermal behavior; natural lighting; acoustic performance; shading in buildings and urban environments; occupant’s comfort and air quality; flexibility of use; new processes and construction techniques; industrialized construction and prefabrication; combination of conventional and new materials; sustainable components and materials, digital manufacturing; digital design; integrated sensors and actuators in building monitoring and enhancement; live vegetation in façades and roofs; environmental conditioning systems; air pollution abatement performances of green infrastructure; Live vegetation in facades and roofs for hygrothermal, lighting and acoustic control and air pollution abatement.
