This investigation focused on the relationship between Portuguese Language and Mathematics learning, in the main aspect of problem text interpretation and understanding, at the level of the posing/solving mathematical problems and investigations. At this extent three sets of questions has been identified: 1) How can we characterise the performance of 4th grade children in problem solving? Which skills do they reveal? How did they evolve during the study? 2) Which difficulties do those students reveal, concerning with problem text interpretation and understanding when they solve problems? Which difficulties do those students reveal in mathematics? How can we explain and overtake these difficulties? 3) How can we characterise the influence of Portuguese Language in mathematical problem solving, when 4th grade children explore them? A case study was made. Data collection was made in 4th grade class, and it evolved four pairs of nine years old students. Questionnaires were applied to the class teacher and to the students, participant observation, audio and video recording of the class work was made and the written documents produced by the students, during their work, were analysed. Some work notes were registered also. In the end, some interviews to the teacher and to the students were made. Data analysis made possible the verification of the skills and of the difficulties shown by the students. The selection of the adequate strategies in problem solving and oral and written communication were the most noticeable difficulties, because it was strange to the students the fact that they could not use directly basic operations algorithms and they probably would have few explanation, justification and clarifying habits in mathematics class. Nevertheless it was at this level that students improved their performances all along the study. The pairs, who showed a higher number of skills in Portuguese Language, such as reading, interpretation and understanding of problem solving texts, solved the mathematics tasks more easily. This study allows to say beforehand that Portuguese Language seems to affect the performance of 4th grade students in solving and posing problems and in mathematics investigations. Thus, we can conclude that grater and better domain of the Portuguese Language by the students, the greater and better their performance in mathematics. |
