Revista Lusófona de Estudos Culturais [1, 2021] – Cidade “sentiente”: uma paisagem atonal

Abstract

[Excerto] Do ponto de vista etimológico, o termo “sentiente”, que nesta publicação norteia a problemática de base adotada, de algum modo subjacente aos diferentes artigos/conteúdos, afim de “senciente”, advém do latim, correspondendo ao particípio presente de sentire, “sentir” e definindo o “que sente” (Porto Editora, s.d.). Entende-se aqui o uso da palavra na sua acoplação à cidade (cidade sentiente), impondo-se assim perspetivar as “formas sensíveis da vida social” (Sansot, 1986) que no espaço-corpo urbano se manifestam, gerando sentires e sentimentos (Stimmung) que catapultam uma dada visão (cinestésica), de natureza preferencialmente fenomenológica, sobre o mundo contemporâneo, tal qual vivido no quotidiano. Com esta experiência estão comprometidas as subjetividades, as instâncias materiais do exercício relacional que define (e tensiona) as identidades sociais e culturais, mas também a expansão do ser sobre o seu carácter compósito, híbrido, pós-humano (Hayles, 1999). A cidade–carne que importa explanar desdobra-se, pois, em múltiplas gradações do sentir, extravasando o sentido comum que a palavra “sensível”, também neste quadro não desconsiderada, emana por si. Cidade–sentiente pretende afirmar-se como uma expressão, em suma, “trajetiva”, nos termos de Berque (2000), no seu sentido movente entre a subjetividade do flanêur e o objetual que, no contexto da deriva urbana, o co-constitui e interpela.

[Excerpt] From an etymological point of view, the term “sentient”, which in this issue leads the underlying problematic adopted, somehow underpinning the different articles/contents, derives from Latin sentiens, the present participle of sentire, to perceive by the senses (definition retrieved from a Portuguese dictionary; Porto Editora, n.d.). The word is used in its connection to the city (sentient city), thus imposing a perspective on the “sensible forms of the social life” (Sansot, 1986) that emerge in the urban space-body, giving rise to feelings and sentiments (Stimmung) that catapult a certain (kinaesthetic) vision, preferably phenomenological in nature, on the contemporary world, as experienced in everyday life. This experience compromises subjectivities, the material instances of the relational exercise that defines (and stresses) social and cultural identities, but also the expansion of the being about its composite, hybrid, post-human character (Hayles, 1999). The city of flesh that is to be explained unfolds, therefore, in multiple gradations of feeling, going beyond the common sense that the word “sensitive”, also in this context, emanates. Sentient—city is an expression, in short, “trajective”, in the words of Berque (2000),in its moving sense between the subjectivity of the flanêur and the object that, within the urban drift, co-forms and challenges it.
