Argumentação e análise do discurso na perspectiva de O. Ducrot

Abstract

A investigação em comunicação social deu, desde os seus primórdios, grande relevo ao estudo das mensagens, como ilustra o largo recurso aos métodos e técnicas de “análise de conteúdo”. As limitações de ordem teórica e metodológica deste tipo de análise tal como, por exemplo, Berelson a definiu, não anulam a relevância dos objectivos de natureza científica e social que por ela se visavam. Comungando, de certo modo, desses mesmos objectivos, pensamos que os elementos de teoria semântica propostos por O. Ducrot nos oferecem bases sólidas para reconhecer, através da análise das mensagens linguísticas ou discursos correntes na interacção social, aspectos relevantes, tais como os valores sociais, inerentes às mentalidades, ideologias e cultura da própria sociedade. Privilegiando aqui a apresentação da teoria argumentativa de Ducrot, desenvolvem-se os seguintes passos: 1) concepção do discurso e do sentido e quadro terminológico; 2) natureza argumentativa do sentido, ao nível da língua e ao nível do discurso, especialmente dos topoi ou princípios argumentativos; 3) aproximação entre os topoi e os valores sociais. Em conclusão, o contributo de Ducrot, entre outros autores, para a renovação da retórica e da argumentação.

The study of messages has been granted a strong relevance in the beginnings of mass communication research, “content analysis” techniques being fairly well accepted at the time. The theoretical and methodological limitations of content analysis, as Berelson defined it, do not invalidate the importance of its objectives concerning the social knowledge that it primarily searched for. Because we agree with those objectives to a certain extent, we believe that the elements of semantic theory proposed by Oswald Ducrot offer solid grounds to acknowledge relevant features of society as far as mentalities (as well as ideologies and cultures) are concerned, by means of the analysis of current speech and linguistic messages present in social interaction. The present reflection will privilege the presentation of Ducrot’s argumentation theory along the following steps: 1) speech and meaning conception: definitions and terms; 2) the argumentative nature of meaning, at the level of linguistic structure as well as at the level of the speech, namely by means of the topoi; 3) topoi and social values. On balance, the original contribution of Ducrot is stressed, as well as the convergence of his thought with other modern authors, in order to point rhetoric’s and argumentation’s new advancements.
