The contemporary novel Chronicle of a blood merchant (许三观卖血记, Xǔ sān guān mài xuè jì) reflects about popular Chinese themes and contains many Chinese proverbs and idiomatic expressions. These proverbs and expressions are not only a linguistic phenomenon, but also a cultural phenomenon, a wealth accumulated by the Chinese nation throughout its long history. In the Portuguese version, translator Tiago Nabais maintained the original expression and socio-cultural Chinese characteristics. However, some literal translation phenomena have caused considerable controversy. The present work considers several idiomatic expressions’ translation examples, exploring the reasons why the translator chose some translation approaches and the effect that this may have had on different target readers. The entire analysis was carried out in the light of Newmark's translation theory, combining two strategies - the “semantic translation” and the “communicative translation”, considering the type of text, its contexts and the target readers.
