About 40 years ago, a new paradigm was established about investigations related to the teacher's knowledge. These studies focused on the subject the teacher teaches. In this line of ideas, the present work explores the Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching of 1st and 2nd cycle teachers in Portugal, having the following guiding research questions, which it proposed to answer: (1) To what extent and of How can US-built measures be adapted so that they can be used to measure mathematical knowledge for teaching in Portugal? (2) What is the mathematical knowledge for teaching of 1st and 2nd grade teachers in Portugal ?. For this, a mixed research approach was adopted, and the following data collection techniques were used: the Mathematical Knowledge measurement tool to Teach with questions of multiple choice questions of Numbers, Operations and Concepts and Geometry and Measure, developed by the Michigan research group in the USA with the Learning Mathematics for Teaching project; cognitive interviews and document analysis. In this study, after the translation of the questionaire independently by two researchers and its adaptation to the Portuguese context; it was validated by six collaborators – researchers specializing in mathematics education and/ or teachers from the early years, who gave their opinion on the adequacy of the questionnaire to the Portuguese reality; finally, the questionnaire was applied to 61 Portuguese teachers from the 1st and 2nd cycles of Basic Education. The main conclusions of the study are the following about the mathematical knowledge of this sample of Portuguese teachers from the early years: - Teachers performed better on issues involving Common Content Knowledge (CCK) than on those requiring Specialized Knowledge of Content (SCK) (Ball, Thames & Phelps, 2008); - Teachers participating in the research revealed the lowest scores on questions involving Knowledge of Student and Content (KSC) (Ball, Thames & Phelps, 2008) – Teachers participating in this research performed better on questions involving “Geometry and Measure” than in the “Numbers and Operations” questions. |
