Studying about cinema is also investigating architecture. Following this commitment, this dissertation is dedicated to analyzing the places of space and time in cinema as it will be thought, imagined and realized by Andrei Tarkovsky. To this end, it will start from some segments of the filmmaker’s five films (namely: “Ivan’s Childhood” (1962), “Andrei Rublev” (1966), “Solaris” (1972), “Mirror” (1975) and “Stalker” (1979)) as a way of approaching the architecture present in the construction of his images. If Tarkovsky admits a cinema as close as possible to reality, in a decomposition of events, feelings and spaces, this study seeks a way of accessing architecture (but also other arts) through a cinema supported by a certain conception of space and time. If it can be said that in Tarkovsky’s films everything is architectural, be it the permanent confrontation between science and religion, the city, and other atmospheres, it can also be said that everything is temporal, be it memory and what is suspended, the gender or the new worlds. Starting from here, the dissertation is organized in two parts: the first is closer to space issues; and the second closest to the questions of time. The arts, on the other hand, complete the work through inserts that communicate with Tarkovsky’s cinema and the theme in which they are inserted, providing a new vision through other subjects and authors. Finally, it can be said that Tarkovsky transports to his films a spatial and temporal (spiritual) meaning that appears in the image through visual and sound metaphors, letting the viewer’s imagination decipher its meaning. Tarkovsky removes the usefulness of spaces and creates an architectural metamorphosis, where rain penetrates through the roof, water floods the ground, erosion runs along the wall and spaces reflect feelings.
