Churches are emblematic buildings within the European and American historic centres, and their towers are landmarks in the urban landscape given their height. The dynamic behaviour of unreinforced masonry towers has been extensively studied. However, research about their performance under other type of dynamic forces is not common. The oscillation of four bells and their effect on the south bell tower of the National Palace of Mafra, Portugal, were assessed in this work. The frequencies of the dynamic actions were compared with the fundamental frequencies of the tower. Furthermore, a finite element model was generated to perform nonlinear dynamic analyses and nonlinear pushover analyses, aiming at simulating the structural response and evaluating the safety factor. The results showed that the bell tower presents an elastic behaviour, since the swinging of the bells produces small displacements. |
