Today the automotive industry is the third largest in the manufacturing sector, having an important impact on the economy. Being an ever-developing industry that always cares for the satisfaction of the final consumer, the need to make driving more safer and efficient is now a must. For this reason, today, autonomous driving is pointed out as the next milestone in the automotive industry, and for the next few years huge progress is expected. This thesis “born” within the scope of the need to improve existing technologies, such as LiDAR, which together with other technologies help autonomous driving. Thus, the goal of the present project, it to develop a self-cleaning solution that can be applied in a polymer optic window, which will be an integral part of a sensor with LiDAR technology. In the first phase of this project, several transparent polymeric materials were studied, such as PC, PMMA and COC, which presented good optical, thermal and chemical characteristics for the concept. Parallel to the choice of the polymeric substrate, was made a selection of some (super)-hydrophobic coatings existing on the market, which could be applied on transparent plastics. These coatings were then applied to a transparent PC material by two simple and inexpensive techniques, easily applicable to mass production – spraying and dipping. The coated polycarbonate was subsequently subjected to thermal, chemical, optical and abrasive tests in order to evaluate the performance of the different coating under different and important conditions for the application. At the end of the project, it was possible to obtain a transparent surface with acceptable self-cleaning properties, which has good chemical, thermal and abrasion resistance.
