In the last twenty years, the need for Sexual Education at schools has been considered an essential factor in the holistic and harmonious development of children. It has, therefore, taken on a central role in the fields of Education and Health, thus generating development in their legal framework over the years. We are conscious of the taboos, controversy, beliefs and learning, resulting from empirical knowledge, which still revolve around the theme of sexuality today. This is especially true of Human Reproduction and there is, consequently, an urgent need to develop some scientific literacy to provide individuals with a set of scientific skills and technologies which will enable them to enjoy a better life quality. It is in this context that formal education plays a predominant role by contributing to the interpretation and readjustment of various concepts, as well as those based on scientific knowledge. Research undertaken in the context of the Didactics of Science, with notable contributions from De Vecchi (1999, 2002), Teixeira (1999), Clément (2003) and Carvalho et al. (2004), have highlighted the importance of studying these concepts during the learning process, since they can constitute an aid to students in the process of conceptual changes. Owing to this pertinence, the ultimate purpose of this analysis is that of studying pupils’ concepts, before and after formal education, regarding Human Biology - more specifically Human Reproduction - as well as identifying possible difficulty patterns and learning obstacles. Thus, research was based on a cross-section sample of 191 students (of both sexes), ranging from the 1st to the 4th grade of schooling, attending a primary school in the centre of the city of Braga. The principal means of data collection was that of a questionnaire, which students filled in themselves, mostly comprising objective questions. These were answered by writing or drawing. Interviews were held merely as a complementary data collection technique in the case of first-year students, due to their limited writing skills. The eight teachers responsible for these classes were also interviewed, orally and informally, in order to obtain pedagogical and didactic information regarding the issue of the Reproduction System. Besides the questionnaires, the textbook used in the third grade for the subject of Biology was also analysed so as to ascertain its approach to the theme. The purpose here was that of determining its influence on the learning process. The methodology adopted in this study was based on a qualitative type of interpretation; content was analysed for data treatment with the aim of establishing categories and macro-categories for similar contents. The techniques and instruments of quantitative methodology were only adopted in the procedures used for the treatment of statistical data; the program Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was applied to the latter. The results obtained reveal that there is a clear presence of conceptual patterns typical of the periods before and after formal learning. In this context, it is worth mentioning some of the ideas regarding the origin of life and fertilization; previous concepts based on warped social and religious values emerge, resulting in the idea that a baby appears in the mother’s belly as a result of divine intention or the mother’s wish (female preformism), because of the abnormal ingestion of food or even as a factor conditioned by marriage. The children’s replies in the second grade of schooling, though they have no scientific support, reveal conceptions which essentially imply the existence of a man and a woman in the making of a child, where the man appears in a more active role, whereas the woman is more passive (the man puts a seed in the mother). After a period of learning, there is a significant conceptual change; this is reflected in the fact that popular terminology is no longer used, as well as in the way the topic of fertilization is dealt with. Categories of greater complexity emerge: besides the course followed by sex cells, there is a greater concern in associating the sexual relationship with a set of emotions (love) experienced by two people, regardless of their civil status. Generally, one can see that this issue is still a taboo for many teachers and, consequently, for students too: conceptual changes occur in the simpler issues and in those to which children have greater access of complementary information (in the iconic representation of male and female reproduction organs; in the terminology used in these representations; in the development of the foetus; in the terminology used to designate the sources of nutrition/respiration of the foetus; in the period of gestation and in the birthing process). The issues pertaining to the organs responsible for the production of male or female sex cells. as well as to contraception and to sexually transmitted diseases are still dealt with superficially or are simply omitted in the learning process; this has resulted in the prevalence of elementary conceptions which are typical of non-formal education. After a year of learning (the 4th grade), there generally seems to be a conceptual regression in most of the issues, and the children’s thought patterns become more reductive in the context of formal learning. The textbook used reveals some flaws, ranging from the superficial scientific content of the subject at hand to the omission of apects which are not only related to organs of reproduction (the scrotum, the vulva, the Fallopian tubes, the clitoris, the placenta, as well as pictures of the pregnant woman, of the birthing process and of the foetus and its embryonic attachments. There are also problems in the area of Health issues (contraception and sexually transmitted diseases). In accordance with the types of conceptions revealed by students, one can conclude that the most obvious learning obstacles are of an epistemological nature; these are related to the teachers’ values and training and/or to the information transmitted by the adopted textbook. It is expected that this study will constitute a good reference tool for teachers to use as a guideline for their pedagogical activities, sensitizing them to the important role of knowledge in students’ previous conceptions, as well as that of possible learning obstacles, so as to make their teaching more motivating and thus ensure that their students’ learning process is successful.
