This research’s theoretical object is the process of social construction of identity. It focuses specifically on the articulation between identity, homo-eroticism, and gender. It analyses: how and whether a particular dimension of the lives of a group of women – sexuality and its emotional elements – becomes a central feature of their identities and ways of life; the relationship they establish between sexuality and gender identity; how religious, juridical, political, and clinical discourses about gender and sexuality hinder their identity construction processes; and finally, to what extent that dimension of their lives has impacts on their daily lives and on their relationship with the Other. Results show that through the analysis of individual cases it is possible to observe the presence of macro-sociological determinants in identity construction processes and in the organisation of conduct, as well as the crucial importance of including the actors’ contribution in sociological analysis. It is the way reality is thought by actors, despite the fact that their ways of thinking do not assume the characteristics of scientific explanation, that guides their action and the meaning they attribute to the action of others. Part of the sociological explanation therefore requires understanding the subjective dimension of reality as an integral and fundamental characteristic of its object. However, it also calls for the elucidation of the relationships and circumstances beyond the subject and his/ her will. This investigation articulates a series of theoretical approaches in order to describe the fundamental dimensions of analysis of identity phenomena. We use especially the contributions of Mead, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology, Bourdieu’s structuralist constructionism, and Boltanski e Thévenot’s sociology of the regimes of action, which are used all through the report to support interpretation. This investigation’s methodology has an eminently qualitative, inductive, and exploratory character. Case-study is the research method adopted, along with the contribution of social research techniques such as direct observation, interview, and questionnaire. Direct observation aimed at gaining access to a group of women who conformed to a single selection criterion – having had, during their lives, at least one homoerotic relationship –, as well as to ensure a certain understanding of the gay and lesbian subculture’s conduct and language codes. Interviews were used in two distinct moments and forms. Semi-structured interviews were accomplished with the leaders of the major Portuguese gay and lesbian associations with the purposes of compensating the absence of research about the Portuguese gay and lesbian community and subculture, and to allow for a brief sketch of the history of its political roots and organisation. This procedure helped elaborating the report’s introductive chapters, allowing for comparisons of similarities and dissimilarities between the Portuguese case and that of other economically developed western societies. Life-story interviews were conducted with the women who composed the investigation’s fundamental empirical object. They constitute the study’s primary empirical material. A questionnaire directly administrated was used to characterise all interviewees in social-demographical terms. It included variables such as sex, age, education (including degree area, when applicable), geographical origin, class origin, and individual class position. Considering the information obtained, it has become obvious the incipient knowledge about the Portuguese reality when compared to other western societies. Results point out to a certain similarity with the latter concerning the way sexuality has become a particular dominion of expertise and social regulation. But they also point out to hindrances and dissimilarities linked to specific social, economical, political, and historical features. Concerning specifically the production of the social category of the homosexual and the lesbian, the formation of specific communities and subcultures, and their members’ ways of life, we are still very distant from the amount and quality of information accessible regarding the economically developed West. Additionally, we notice the need to include in the analysis of the ways the social category of the lesbian is apprehended and actualised – or refused – by women a set of differentiating explicative variables. According to our results, gender, class habitus and class origin, generation, geographical origin, and personal trajectory appear to be particularly discriminant factors of the ways of doing and representing the relationship between the women’s global identity, their gender identity, and their sexual identity. This findings call for further research and expansion, namely considering the age and class composition of our empirical object, and are supported both by suggestions found in the interviewees’ discourses, and by the corroboration of those variables explanatory pertinence in the case of their own narratives.
