Folklore encompasses history, beliefs, popular wisdom and tradition. It is a culture of legends and myths that says a lot about what a people is, constituted by uses and customs transmitted from generation to generation. However, folklore is not reduced to crystallized knowledge, although it is rooted in the ways of life of the ancestors, but lives recording the inevitable changes that occur through contact between different cultures, migrations, and the influence of technological media. Part of UNESCO's cultural work is to guide communities to manage their folk heritage well, knowing that progress and the changes it brings can either enrich a culture or destroy it forever. With this purpose in mind, the present work focused on identifying factors inherent to the preservation of this heritage and, at the same time, highlighting its value as a cultural identity in today's historical and social contexts. In the first part, the work is based through the main theoretical formulations in the field of Cultural Studies in general, musical popular culture as part of a social, historical and political expression of a territory and also in its interaction with other arts and human sciences. The need for an attentive analysis of the reality of Portuguese folk music – which, generally observing the national scene, has been showing controversial trends – aroused the desire to understand how the new generations will manage to perpetuate the safeguarding of their values without repressing obsolete parameters. In the second part, the work presents a study that intends to understand and, in a way, show, which relational contexts determine the approach of young people to popular culture, in particular folklore groups, and which discourses underlie the resolution of this difficulty to the guarantee of a safeguard of this popular heritage. The research was carried out - with its own limitations, determined by the COVID 19 pandemic - in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão with some local folklore groups and through online questionnaires to secondary and university students.
