This academic-scientific dissertation addresses an investigation in Textile Engineering, addresses material science and the circular economy, with the aim of developing a product from food waste. Fashion converges in a complex association of fields of knowledge, studies, and creativity, based on pillars of anthropology, sociology, economics, communication, architecture, and arts. According to Lipovestky (1989), man changes the world, and the contribution of fashion is undeniable in this transformation process. The designer, the industry and the consumer are responsible for the entire life cycle of a product based on their choices. The role of industry is to transform natural resources into raw materials, from which fibers and other materials are produced. When considering the industries by areas of operation, the textile industry, linked to the fashion chain, has not evolved harmoniously in its expansion and global importance, we continue to use the same materials prior to the industrial revolution. In this moment of enormous global disorder, world governments have learned to act together and quickly in the demands of combating the pandemic. However, the impact of industry on the environment, since the industrial revolution, deserves double attention and a relevant legislative context for awareness, change and regeneration of the damage caused to the planet. A change in the system, influenced by new norms for sustainable production and consumption, is paramount. With the advent of studies, questions, and definitions on sustainability in fashion, the urgency of alternatives and perspectives for the transition from the current linear system to circular systems, through the analysis of problems at the level of inputs, waste generation, reuse, and discard. The objective to be explored in this study is to signal both the need for changes in relation to the inputs currently used, and to shed light on the reuse of solid waste in the development of new materials. Experimentally proposing the development of a biodegradable button, which uses organic waste from the agri-food sector in its composition. To demonstrate the possibility of reuse of post-consumer food waste, with biodegradable characteristics.
