Although the association between the feeding method and/or depression of the mother and the quality of mother-infant interaction has already been addressed in the literature, inconsistent data were presented regarding the quality of mother-infant interaction during breastfeeding or bottle feeding in mothers with or without depression. The main objectives of this study are to analyze (1) the differences in mother-infant interaction during breastfeeding versus bottle feeding; (2) differences in mother-infant interaction between depressed and non-depressed mothers; (3) the moderating role of breastfeeding in the effect of depression on the quality of mother-infant interaction. A sample of 55 primiparous pregnant women, recruited in the third trimester of pregnancy were recorded in the mother-infant interaction during feeding situation, at 3 months postpartum. The results showed that bottle-feed infants showed worse interactive behavior than exclusively breastfeed infants and that depressed mothers showed worse interactive behavior than non-depressed mothers. Breastfeeding also revealed to have a moderating role in the effect of maternal depression on the quality of mother-infant interaction. This study emphasizes the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and good maternal, prenatal and postpartum mental health for better mother-infant interactive behavior and mother-infant interaction.
