COVID-19 is the official name of the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which was first identified in the city of Wuhan, China, in late 2019. The virus rapidly spread around the world and the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020. The pandemic has become the focus of concerns and decisions, as well as interests, for international organizations, governments, companies, different types of organizations and institutions, both public and private, and society in general. Words such as emergency, calamity, quarantine, isolation, lockdown, to name but a few, have seeped into political and media discourses and everyday conversations, generating fear, uncertainty, and mandatory changes in customs and behaviours. Remote working has become the norm, as has remote learning, making it clear that the impact of the crisis is not just health-related, but also political, social, and economic. This thesis is the result of research conducted during the pandemic, with the author taking on the dual role of researcher and teacher at the school where the study was carried out (a 2nd and 3rd cycles primary education school in Lisbon). Interest in the subject matter first appeared during work on a master's degree dissertation, and our goal is to expand the original study, approximately ten years on, now in a “school at home” environment. The main objective of the research was to understand how children's lives were affected by the pandemic, from their own point of view. The working hypothesis was that "full-time school" does not consist only of a public policy to extend the school day to at least 8 hours, the equivalent of a work day for adults, but, most of all, that it entails the reproduction of the “school form” in contexts and modalities that reach far beyond the borders of school itself. In methodological terms, the initial phase was comprised of exploratory direct observation and reading on the subject. Next, using a survey as the main data collection instrument, a statistical analysis of its results was carried out, as well as analysing data obtained from replies to open questions. In addition, document analysis was also used, focusing on the host of legal regulations and other official documents that were issued, day and night, during the pandemic period. Along with other effects of emergency policies, the results show what children did at different times, such as social distancing and lockdown, with emphasis on “school at home” and play – what?, where?, with whom? –, including comparisons with “before the pandemic”.
