As representações do imigrante brasileiro no jornalismo impresso local: estudo de caso comparado entre o Diário do Minho (Braga – Portugal) e L’Adige (Trento – Itália)

Abstract

Esta investigação foi desenvolvida no âmbito do Mestrado em Ciências da Comunicação, Área de Especialização Informação e Jornalismo e tem por objetivo verificar como e quando o(a) imigrante brasileiro(a) foi notícia nos diários impressos regionais Diário do Minho (Braga, Portugal) e L’Adige (Trento, Itália) durante todo o ano de 2007. Optamos pela utilização de uma triangulação metodológica para analisar em maior profundidade os estereótipos sociais e o discurso utilizado para representar esse grupo nacional. Uma grelha de análise foi desenvolvida possibilitando um estudo quantitativo das representações e o tratamento do vasto corpus encontrado. Seguimos com uma análise qualitativa dos títulos com temas em que o imigrante brasileiro obteve destaque, utilizando a Análise Crítica do Discurso proposta por Teun A. Van Dijk. Algumas informações com as entrevistas aos chefes de redação complementaram este trabalho, identificando possíveis enviesamentos no tratamento dos dados e diversificando os pontos de vista sob a óptica da produção do discurso. A hipótese geral de pesquisa é de que o imigrante brasileiro é representado enquanto grupo e não como indivíduo “singular” com características próprias. As sub-hipóteses ligadas à presença dos homens imigrantes brasileiros, como maioria nas notícias, estão associadas a uma forte segmentação ocupacional ou como destaque em primeira página, na maioria dos casos, relacionada ao desporto ou à criminalidade. A investigação empírica corroborou as hipóteses. Esta dissertação está dividida em duas partes principais. A primeira com informações sobre os contextos sociais em análise, um quadro resumido da imigração brasileira em Braga e Trento e uma breve revisão de literatura sobre as expressões de racismo. Na segunda parte, propomos a análise dos dados recolhidos durante o ano de 2007. Por se tratar de um estudo comparado, optamos por dividir os capítulos por jornal para facilitar a leitura das informações. Utilizamos a análise comparativa somente em algumas variáveis da grelha. Finalmente, observamos que os jornais locais analisados trabalham na mesma linha dos jornais nacionais, mesmo em escala inferior, e continuam a representar o imigrante através de uma imagem estereotipada e discriminatória. Nas considerações finais são discutidas algumas propostas para o tratamento das notícias sobre os imigrantes.

This dissertation was develop as part of the MA program in Communication Science, Specialization Area in Information and Journalism, and aims to verify how and when the Brazilian immigrant was noticed in the daily local newspapers: Diário do Minho (Braga, Portugal) and L’Adige (Trent, Italy), during all 2007. We adopted a triangular methodology to deeper analyze the social stereotypes and the discourse used to represent this national group. We started with the development of a list of variables that allowed us the quantitative analysis of the representations and helped to deal with the vast corpus founded. Then, through the Critical Discourse Analysis proposed by Teun A. Van Dijk, we applied the qualitative analysis for the headlines with themes where Brazilian immigrant received some evidence. At least, we complemented some information with the newspapers editor interviews, trying to avoid distortions in the interpretation of the catalogued data, and to change point of view, once they belong to the group of the discourse producers. Our main hypothesis is that the Brazilian immigrant would be represented as group, and not as a singular individual with their own characteristics. The secondary hypotheses were about the majority presence of Brazilian men in the news, associated with the occupancy segmentation. Besides that, we expected to find Brazilian immigrants evidenced in the front page of the newspaper, in the majority of the cases, when related to Sport or Crime. This investigation validated our hypotheses. This work is divided into two main parts. The first one contains some information about the social context target, a short characterization of the Brazilian immigration at Braga and Trent, and a sight of literature review about the expressions of racism. In the second part, we propose an analysis of all catalogued news found in 2007. Our option of doing a case study justifies the division of the chapters by the local newspaper and helps the interpretation of data. We used the comparative analysis only for some variables of the main table. Finally, we observed that the local newspapers analyzed work in the same way as the national ones, even if in a minor scale, they still represent the immigrant through a stereotyped image and in a discriminatory way. In our conclusions we discuss some proposals for the treatment of the news concerning immigrants and other final considerations.
