Assim, a promoção e
Research has shown the importance and positive effects of breastfeeding but women, even the most educated, tend to stop breastfeeding very early. Multiple factors seem to contribute negatively to this early decision, therefore its support and encouragement should be taken as a priority in public health policy. Nurses working in primary health care and in the community have a crucial role to the encouragement, education and information about breastfeeding, mainly among young women and first time mothers. Focused in this, and as integrant part of the Health System, the family nurse have to be committed in intervening and implementing tools that enhance the success of breastfeeding, thus carrying out this social and professional responsibility. By this way, the nurse will actively listen to every mother in order to understand and clarify all the questions and beliefs about breastfeeding, thus helping in making breastfeeding an act of mutual pleasure between mother and baby. The action of health professionals in communities should be grounded in an environment of co-participation with the patientfamily/ group-community as well as in a mutual respect attitude towards the search of solutions to the needs reported. The recommendations of the World Health Organisation on breastfeeding justify the pertinence of this project, suggesting that it should be exclusive until the sixth month of birth and complementary until the two years old of age. This project aims to give mothers/families conditions that promote adherence behaviours to breastfeeding and give support on difficulties felt during this process. Therefore, a set of activities were implemented, in permanent interaction within the binomial mother/ family and baby, in order to respond to difficulties detected during the process of assessing the needs of these mothers/families. The research methodology used in this project was participatory action research. This was considered the most adequate research option to the aims and activities of this project, as it sets the ground for the interaction with the target group, increasing the knowledge about this group and consequently promoting behavioural changes. |
