resistência à deformação permanente e a sensibilidade à água. A deformação permanente é
Pavements can distress for various reasons, reducing its durability. The occurrence of rutting and other degradations caused by water sensitivity are examples of a reduced durability, particularly in countries with high rainfall, lower quality of some materials or high ambient temperatures, as is the case of many emerging economies where some national companies are starting to work. Thus, it is important to study the influence that the mixture composition may have in the occurrence of these two phenomena, analyzing the factors that may influence these pathologies, such as the aggregate grading and maximum size and the type/content of bitumen. The objective of this work is to understand the way that grading and the use of hard/soft bitumen can influence the rutting resistance and water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures. Thus, five mixtures with different composition were studied, varying the aggregate grading envelope and maximum size in four of them, and using a different type of bitumen in the other. By changing these parameters it was also possible to verify the effect of the bitumen content in the mixture performance. The tests used in this study were the wheel tracking test (EN 12697-22), in order to study the rutting resistance, and the experimental procedures of EN 12697-12 to study the sensitivity to water, as both are the procedures most commonly used to study these behaviors in European countries. This work showed that the mixture composition greatly influences the rutting resistance and water sensitivity. The permanent deformation is more influenced by the type and content of bitumen, presenting the worst results with a softer bitumen or an aggregate grading near the superior limit of the envelope (which uses a higher bitumen content), while the best result was obtained for the aggregate grading near the inferior limit of the envelope. Concerning the water sensitivity performance, the best result was obtained for the mixture with a higher maximum size of aggregates and for the aggregate grading based in the over limit of the envelope, and the worst result was obtained for the aggregate grading based in the under limit of the envelope. In fact, higher values of voids content and lower amounts of bitumen evolving the aggregates results in mixtures with higher sensitivity to water. |
