As RNAs adquirem
Aging is an inevitable part of the life cycle and, as the years go by, the average human life expectancy increases. For that reason, the consequences of aging must be taken into account throughout a person’s life so that they can early adopt preventive measures. It is imperative to provide to this large part of the population the chance to live their last years as healthy, autonomous and independent as possible. In order to fulfill this objective, it is important to develop a system that helps the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. These disorders manifest themselves by a progressive and irreversible destruction of different types of neurons, leading to a gradual loss of motor skills, physiological and/or cognitive impairments. Through the use of accelerometers and gyroscopes, placed in strategic parts of the human body, it is possible to measure some kinetic parameters of posture and imbalances that, after analysis, can be used to diagnose certain neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's dementia. Therefore, we used Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), which present a wide range of applications that can be adapted to the needs of analysis required in this work. An ANN is a set of computational techniques that consists of a mathematical model inspired by the neural structure of human beings. It is composed of nonlinear processing elements interconnected, called neurons. ANNs acquire knowledge by learning rules, allowing them to relate information coherently. In other words, ANNs examine the parameters obtained by the acquisition system (posture and imbalances) and return the patient's diagnosis, so that preventive measures against those diseases can be early taken. This system will be used at the Centro Hospitalar do Alto Ave (CHAA), while patients perform several neurological tests. |
