This dissertation is about the music digital distribution and the impact that it had on the music industry. The aim of this work is to understand the changes in the music industry since it started to be distributed digitally. To delineate the problem and guide the investigation, four objectives were proposed. They aim to understand the effect of music digitalization in several areas of the music industry, namely: i) in the relationship network of the value network of music industry; ii) in the business models of the artists and labels; iii) in the relationship between artists and consumers; iv) as well to understand how the new music distribution models affected the live music industry. To accomplish these objectives a qualitative research was performed, with data being collected by semi-structured interviews. Twelve interviews to people connected to the music industry were made. These interviews were recorded in audio format and then transcribed. Then, the collected data was analyzed by the content analysis method. It was possible to conclude that the digital distribution changed significantly the structure of the music industry, resulting in a loss of power of the labels face to other music industry elements. It was also concluded that both labels and artists had diversified their roles in response to the sales decline of music in physical supports. This was a consequence of the digitalization of music itself and its distribution channels, but also due of the digitalization of music production. The studied changes also show the straightened of the relationships between the artist and the final consumer. Concerning the present growing of the live music market, it was possible to conclude that it was caused by several factors, namely: the digitization of the music market made music more accessible to consumers, and also created a broader platform for artists to reach their target consumers; the emergence of a "festival culture" in the younger consumers; and the increasing interest of brands with activities not related to the music market. |
