As
tamariscifolia (Alga castanha - Phaeophyta), Chondrus crispus (Alga vermelha - Rhodophyta) e
In the upper subtidal limit of temperate rocky shores, macroalgae are a conspicuous element in the shore landscape. In spite of the differences between species, macroalgae can be grouped by the way they contribute to the structural complexity of the environment. Big kelps are considered habitat builders, as they create complex habitat in shallow waters for a significant number of animals, namely fishes. Smaller algae, although its contribution being more modest, can also be of paramount importance for small invertebrates, such as small crustaceans, annelids, molluscs and even fish larvae. The role of this algae as habitat builders is related with the complexity of the canopy. Foliose algae will offer more space for settlement than compact or linear type algae. In this work, three species with different canopy structure, Cystoseira tamariscifolia (Brow Algae - Phaeophyta), Chondrus crispus (Red Algae - Rhodophyta) and Codium tomentosum (Green Algae - Chlorophyta) where sampled in order to study the macroinvertebrate fauna associated with them. The results obtained allows for the enlightenment of the effect of the canopy structure on the macroinvertebrates richness and diversity of the lower intertidal fringe on Atlantic rocky shores. Through the identification of the macrofaunal associated to the highest detail possible, it was obtained a data matrix used in Similarity analyses (Cluster and NMDS). The results showed the separation of the sampling in three distinct groups: Cystoseira tamariscifolia, Codium tomentosum e Codium tomentosum. Indicating that the macroalgae canopy structure influences the macrofauna associated to the algae. Due to the significant differences between samples, with Cystoseira tamariscifolia having significantly higher levels of abundance and richness of associated species, the role of this specie of macroalgae is reaffirmed as a habitat builder. |
