The pose, that fictional composition of the body and of the person before a photography lens, has undergone into diverse cultural transformations since the invention of photography. This article gives a brief historical retrospective of the pose and relates the main technological changes that determined cultural transformations in body figurations in the almost 180 years of photography history. From the imperative necessity of the pose, with the few technological resources in the beginning, its rise through four lens of cartes-de-visite, the demarcation of a narrative in social photography, and the new catalogues of poses with the invention of digital equipment, until the emergence of the selfie. This, the newest and the most imperative body figuration, is the democratization of self-portrait, where the person who is posing is also the operator of the equipment and he seeks to control its own pose at all complex levels of meanings. Always related to the power and social body image of the portrayed, the pose, in this context, is a form of communication and of meaning which has inscribed the marks of time. |
