Qual a situação atual?
No seguimento disto, efetuámos
No entanto, Real considera
The present work intends to present an overview of Miguel Real’s cultural reflections (up to 2016), taking as a unifying theme the considerations he makes on the historical and current dynamics of the relationship between Portugal and Europe and the Lusophone countries. In fact, at a time when after each referendum, each election, the future of Europe – and, by extension, that of Portugal – seems to be at stake, the questioning of this relationship becomes rather urgent. What is the current situation? How did we get here? What does the future hold for Portugal and Europe? In Miguel Real we have found a thinker who answers all these questions. Thus, we begin by analysing the historical context of the relation between Portugal and Europe, from the moment of emergence of the Portuguese culture to Portugal’s accession to the European Communities, passing through the moments in which this relation acquired a very particular facet in the aftermath of the disaster of Alcácer Quibir and the subsequent loss of independence. We easily came to the conclusion that Portugal has always taken Europe as its principal interlocutor; even in the moments of crisis, it was always looking towards Europe that we looked at ourselves; it was always in the European mirror that we sought our image. After this, we consider the current moment of the relationship between Portugal and Europe. More than thirty years have passed since Portugal's accession to the European Communities, and so we consider that the moment is appropriate for an assessment. Miguel Real is very critical about the country's current situation; that is the case in cultural terms, but also in political and economic ones. Indeed, he believes that Portugal's 'European dream' has failed. Real also considers that Europe is experiencing a rapid process of decay. In strong contradiction with its historical being, Europe is in the present a political project that is held captive by a technocratic ideology, which little or nothing owes to the values of its historical philosophy, humanism. Following this, we make an analysis of the proposals that Real offers for the future of Portugal, and it is at this point that his considerations about Lusophony enter the stage. In fact, he considers that Portugal’s future hinges on two major axes, Europe and Lusophony, not taking them as mutually exclusive. However, Real considers that, due to Europe’s current moment of decadence, Portugal should increasingly shift its focus to Lusophony, which he deems as an alternative for Portugal’s future. Moreover, Real already identifies in the Lusophone world a civilisational dimension of its own. |
