Prevalence studies are important because they allow the identification of the most frequent conditions. Most of the prevalence studies of binocular dysfunctions analyze nonrandomized and non-homogeneous populations about age, gender and size, making comparison between studies unreliable. There is also no consensus among researchers on the best means of diagnosis during the refractive examination. After bibliographic research, it was concluded that the accommodative dysfunctions are the most frequent in the university population, so that was the initial objective of this study. It became obvious that heterophoric dysfunctions could not be neglected, since the associated symptomatology is similar, which would make it difficult to distinguish it. Therefore, a sample of 55 university students was used, with a mean of age of 21.22 ± 2.62, which 49.1% were myopes, 45.5% emmetropes and 5.5% hypermetropes. A complete visual examination was performed in the Office of Optometry at the University of Minho. The participants did the CISS questionnaire, passing to refraction and binocular vision tests. As a main result, 60% of the participants in the study did not present any type of dysfunction, 25.5% presented accommodative disorders, of which 23.7% had accommodative insufficiency and 1.8% accommodative inflexibility, while 14.5% had heterophoric dysfunctions, of which 9.1% had convergence insufficiency and 1.8% a basic exophoria. Regarding symptomatology, 83.6% of the participants were classified as asymptomatic for the CISS questionnaire, while only 16.4% were classified as symptomatic. The values found highlight the need to raise awareness among university students about the existence of these types of dysfunctions that may affect their school performance. The study serves as an alert to optometrists for the need to perform a complete visual examination, in order to avoid any possible dysfuncion of binocular vision. |
