The world' s current energy and environmental situation demands a revolution in several sectors. Since the construction sector plays an important role in the use of energy and resources, it is urgent to study different philosophies, strategies, technologies and building solutions that contribute to a more sustainable development. Vernacular architecture is a result of traditional knowledge, based on the trial and error approach and proves that humankind has developed specific construction strategies to meet the houses’ interior comfort needs, according to the geographical and climatic conditions and the local resources available. The adaptation to the surrounding environment strategies applied in these constructions is particularly relevant, because they promote the interaction between climatic variables and the building, passively, therefore contributing to the thermal performance of the building and comfort of the occupants. Portugal is a good case of study example, since the climate and the availability of materials are different from region to region, originating different vernacular architectural manifestations. In this way, the main passive climate control strategies used in Portuguese vernacular buildings are studied in this document. To understand the effectiveness of these strategies, the methodologies used for the evaluation of comfort conditions and thermal behaviour are studied, and later a building located in Beira Alta, with glazed balconies as a strategy to capture solar gains, is evaluated. From the study it is possible to assert that passive heating and cooling strategies are adequate to guarantee the thermal comfort conditions of buildings, without the support of mechanical air conditioning systems. The role of the occupants in the adaptation of the indoor environment to comfort conditions is also crucial. The results of the research will be beneficial for professionals involved in the development of efficient, bioclimatic and sustainable buildings. These principles represent a high potential to be applied in the current building context, where active systems are increasingly being reduced and passive systems used. |
