(litoral vs. interior, alta vs. baixa densidade populacional, áreas metropolitanas vs.
This study aims to characterise the food retail sector in Mainland Portugal. Thus, the evolution of the concentration index in the period between the years 2013 and 2020 was analysed. Furthermore, we tried to verify if there is any relationship between competition and growth. For that purpose, data was collected from Orbis Europe, for a sample of 6,390 food retail companies in Mainland Portugal. Despite the vast literature on the topic, there is no empirical evidence for the Portuguese context with such a large sample of firms. The results obtained in this study showed that the food retail sector in Portugal, despite having a high concentration index, has shown a continuous decrease over the years analysed. Similarly, it was possible to see that the number of municipalities with the highest concentration index has been decreasing over the years and that the number of municipalities with the lowest index, on the contrary, has been increasing. When relating the concentration index to the types of market / municipality (coastal vs. inland, high vs. low population density, metropolitan areas vs. other municipalities), we found that there are differences in the level of competition and that companies tend to be located in areas with high population density. Finally, we related competition with growth and concluded that there is a relationship between both, and that the higher the concentration index, the lower the growth rate. |
