The mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras was the first who studied the relation between mathematics and music. With the monochord he discovered relations between musical intervals and numeric proportions and developed the first tuning system — the pythagorean tuning system — in order to construct the musical scale. However, this system was not consistent, since, for example, twelve intervals of fifths did not correspond to seven octaves. The error due to this difference is designated as pythagorean comma and hinders the use of some tonalities. Over the centuries, new systems have been proposed in order to solve this problem by adjusting the intervals of the musical scale. In this work are presented tuning systems that were developed or applied in the 18th century and the corresponding mathematical resolutions. |
