The conservation of the natural heritage represents an important action to ensure the quality of life for all inhabitants of planet Earth. This activity has also an incalculable scientific value, as the elements that constitutes this heritage holds the necessary information that is needed to investigate and explain the evolution of our planet and all kinds of life that lives on it. One must take into account that the conservation of the natural heritage does not involve only restrictive actions, but its use for leisure, in touristic actions, or for educational and scientific purposes, may contribute to strength territorial identity and bring income to the communities involved in this process, fostering the sustainable development. The natural heritage is composed by the biotic elements, that integrates the biodiversity, and the abiotic elements, that integrates the geodiversity. Historically, almost all the efforts involved in the conservation of this heritage were focused in the conservation of the biodiversity. Due to this, the nature conservation almost turned to be a synonymous of biodiversity conservancy. On the other hand, the conservation of the superlative elements of geodiversity, which represents the geological heritage, was relegated to a minor important role, or sometimes ignored in the of nature conservation strategies. By the end of the 80’s of the 20th century, geoconservation starts to raise in the world debate. Before this decade, all the efforts to this approach were sparse and dispersed, and were almost restricted to the European continent. Actually the conservation of the geological heritage starts to be structured and widespread around the world in 1989, after the creation of the project: Global Indicative List of Geological Sites - GILGES, by the International Union of Geological Sciences - IUGS. Chapada Diamantina is a region located in the central zone of the Bahia’s State, in the northeast of Brazil, inserted in the geological context of the São Francisco Craton. Its geodiversity encompasses sedimentary and low metamorphosed proterozoic rocks, stratigraphically organized in 4 groups, known as: Rio dos Remédios, Paraguaçu, Chapada Diamantina and Una. Sierras, plateaus and karst reliefs were sculpted on these rocks and it represents nowadays important touristic attractions. Beside this, its geodiversity holds important information about the geological evolution of planet Earth, since the Eon Proterozoic. In this doctorate thesis an inventory of the geological heritage of Chapada Diamantina was made, resulting in the identification of 40 geosites, which are mainly of geomorphological interest. These geosites were assessed based in four categories of values: intrinsic, scientific, touristic and use and management. After the evaluation of these values, the potential for scientific use, touristic use, conservation needs and the rank of relevance of the inventoried places, were calculated. For the geosites with higher conservation needs, actions for interpretation, publicizing and monitoring, were proposed. These actions integrate a geoconservation plan and its implementation may contribute for the creation of geoparks. Taking this into account, a methodology for the delimitation of these geoparks was also proposed, based on the intersection of municipality limits, with the morphological and structural geological limits of Chapada Diamantina. With the application of this methodology, 3 proposals of geoparks were delimitated in the region. The implementation of the geoconservation plan and the proposed geoparks will contribute for the conservation, valuing and promotion of Chapada Diamantina’s geological heritage. These actions will also contribute for the creation of alternative income for the region, based on the geotourism, helping to consolidate the sustainable development in that territory and to strength its cultural identity.por
