subsequentes. No segundo capítulo aparece a noção de curva simples no
plano.
No capítulo quatro estuda-
The purpose of this dissertation is to present a study of properties of continuous curves. This study is restricted to simple and rectifiable curves. The necessary knowledge to develop this work are some concepts about metric spaces, notions about convex sets of R2, the definition and some results about zero measure sets. The first chapter introduces some preliminary notions necessary to the subsequent chapters. The second chapter presents the notion of a simple curve in the plane. In order to define the length of rectifiable curves, it is introduced the Hausdorff distance’s definition. The ideas of arc length’s parametrization and parametrization by instantaneous velocity are also presented. The third chapter is dedicated to the Cantor set and some properties of this set are established. It is also defined the Devil’s Staircase and the Peano Curve, a famous example of a curve that fills a square. In chapter four we study the local geometry of rectifiable curves establishing relationships among properties. In the last chapter it is proved a relation between the length of a curve and the area of the Minkowski’s ε -sausage of a curve, when ε tends to zero. In the annex we present biographical notes on Cantor, Hausdorff, Minkowski, Lebesgue Peano and Weierstrass and also a mathematical task applied to high school students who aim to work with challenges. This activity appears in a context where they can test the properties that we studied for rectifiable curves. |
