Educação e crescimento económico em Timor-Leste

Abstract

A literatura tem discutido a importância que a educação pode ter para o crescimento económico e sugere em muitos casos que o seu efeito é positivo. Esta dissertação procura caracterizar a situação em termos de educação formal em Timor-Leste e relacioná-la com o crescimento económico do país através do cálculo de algumas correlações. Os dados sugerem que quer a quantidade de educação quer a sua qualidade têm conhecido uma evolução positiva nos últimos anos, assim como as condições económicas de Timor-Leste. Registam-se ainda algumas oscilações que resultam dos ajustamentos que o país tem precisado de fazer no período pós-independência. Há alguma indicação de uma relação positiva entre educação e crescimento económico, isto é, a educação e o crescimento económico parecem estar a evoluir no mesmo sentido.

Literature has discussed the contribution that education may have to economic growth. Several studies show that education has a positive effect on growth. The present dissertation aims at characterizing the current situation and recent evolution of education in East Timor. It also aims at establishing a relationship between education and economic growth, by means of calculation of several correlations. Data suggest that, in terms of both quantity and quality, the evolution of education over the past years has been positive, such as the economic conditions of East Timor. There are, nevertheless some fluctuations, which result from the required adjustments in the post-independence period. Data also suggest that there is a positive correlation between education and economic growth. That is, education and economic growth have evolved in the same direction.
