"Ou sou um homem ou sou um louco": construções das identidades de género de homens diagnosticados com a doença mental

Abstract

Esta pesquisa de caráter qualitativo tratou da articulação entre doença mental, género, masculinidades e identidades. O objetivo geral foi analisar a experiência com a doença mental a partir de relatos de homens em tratamento psiquiátrico numa instituição no norte de Portugal. Para isso, investimos na categoria género enquanto variável presente nas narrativas destes homens sobre as causas que atribuem à própria doença mental e sobre as mudanças por esta provocada em variadas esferas da vida e que produz impactos nas identidades masculinas. Consideramos a noção de doença mental enquanto uma construção social, que um modelo holístico (combinação entre fatores biológicos, psicológicos e sociais) seja a forma mais adequada de compreendê-la, e a sua análise a partir de uma base sociológica foi o nosso foco. A recolha de informações foi realizada através de entrevistas de história de vida com oito homens com diagnóstico psiquiátrico e analisada a partir de uma perspetiva das relações sociais de género com enfoque nas masculinidades. O estudo mostra a presença, nas diversas formas de vivenciar a doença mental e nos discursos da grande maioria dos entrevistados, uma orientação das suas vidas quotidianas – antes e após o diagnóstico – ligada às estruturas de género tradicionais e ao modelo hegemónico de masculinidade.

This qualitative research focuses on the connections between mental illness, gender, masculinity and identities. The prime objective was to analyze the mental illness experiences from the chronicles of men undergoing mental treatment. The study was carried out in one mental health institution in the North of Portugal. Gender was the major category used to analyze the narratives of these men regarding the causes they attribute to their own mental illness and to changes in many aspects of their lives with impacts on their masculine identity. Although a holistic approach of mental illness (as a combination of biological, psychological and social factors) is the most accurate way to understand the latter, this investigation focused on a sociological perspective, and therefore, the notion of mental illness was conceived as a social construction. Data gathering was accomplished through life-story interviews with eight men with a psychiatric diagnosis, and they were analyzed from the perspective of the social relations of gender, particularly focusing on masculinities. Results show, in the great majority of narratives, the influence of traditional gender structures and the hegemonic model of masculinity in the different modes of experiencing mental illness and in the orientation of everyday life.
