This study aims to investigate the performance of socially responsible stock indices compared to their benchmarks, based on a sample of 15 socially responsible indexes and their conventional indexes, which are representative of various geographic regions, such as Brazil, USA, Europe, Japan, UK, Eurozone and globally. It begins by analyzing the performance of socially responsible indexes for the overall period from 01 December 2001 to 28 February 2010. Subsequently, the performance of these indexes is evaluated across different market cycles. Thus, we implement a methodology that deals with the variable nature of risk over time, by identifying the states of the economy as “bull” or “bear” market, according to the procedure of Pagan and Sossounov (2003). According to the results, the socially responsible indexes did not show a higher or lower performance than their conventional indexes. Thus, socially responsible investors do not necessarily have to incur in financial losses arising from the inclusion of social criteria in their investment decisions. When considering the different market cycles, the results show that socially responsible investments during bear market periods are more attractive to investors than conventional investments, especially for daily data. On the other hand, when the analysis focuses on periods of bull markets, the performance of socially responsible indexes is inferior to its conventional benchmarks. |
