This study is developed in the context of literature in accounting education and aims to study the effect of the accounting professional regulation body in defining the structure of an accounting program. In fact, unlike the lawyers associations and the economics associations that more or less regulate their profession, the accounting profession is highly regulated in Portugal. That is the reason why we find interesting to investigate in what extent the regulatory bodies of the accounting profession influence the definition and structures of the accounting undergraduate curriculum in the Portuguese higher education system. As far as we know, this is the first study to approach this issue in Portugal, reinforcing the idea of the importance of the professional bodies and their influence on curriculum. To achieve the dissertation’s aims, we conducted an interpretive qualitative study. We analyzed eleven accounting curriculum plans delivered by the Portuguese higher education system in 2012. We also sent a questionnaire to the accounting undergraduate degree directors in order to find which other factors were considered in defining the curriculum plan of the accounting undergraduate degree. The results of this study indicate that the structure of the accounting programs are strongly influenced by the professional accounting bodies, as expected. The Portuguese regulator body on accountancy profession has a greater influence than the international regulatory body. We also found that there are other influential factors though with lower level of influence. |
