Explorando a organização e tratamento de dados em turmas dos 2º e 6º anos do Ensino Básico

Abstract

Esta investigação tem como propósito principal identificar dificuldades e constrangimentos de uma abordagem de ensino à Organização e Tratamento de Dados (OTD) no Ensino Básico. Neste sentido foram definidas as seguintes questões de investigação: 1) Que dificuldades manifestam os alunos na interpretação e representação de dados em tabela, diagramas e gráficos; e 2) Que dificuldades senti em encontrar tarefas motivadoras para o tema. Adotou-se uma metodologia qualitativa tendo-se aplicado uma metodologia de investigação-ação. Realizaram-se dois estudos de intervenção, um no 1º ciclo, contando com a participação de 25 alunos, outra no 2º ciclo, com 28 participantes, com contornos semelhantes. Em cada estudo realizaram-se intervenções sobre OTD. No 1º ciclo abordaram-se os diagramas de Venn e Carroll, o diagrama de contagem (Tally Chart), construção de tabelas de frequências e gráficos de pontos e pictogramas. No 2º ciclo abordou-se a tabela de frequências, gráficos de barras e circulares, diagramas de caule – e – folhas, média aritmética, classificação das variáveis, e extremos e amplitude dos dados. Os resultados obtidos no 1º ciclo indicam que os alunos apresentaram dificuldades na representação de dados em diagramas de Carroll, na interpretação e construção do diagrama de Venn e na atribuição de título aos gráficos. Revelaram ainda facilidades na interpretação de diagramas de Carroll, gráficos e tabelas. Os alunos do 2º ciclo manifestaram dificuldades na construção de tabelas de frequências e gráficos de barras, na construção e interpretação de diagramas de caule – e – folhas e também na atribuição de títulos aos gráficos. Contudo, observou-se facilidades destes alunos na interpretação e construção de gráficos circulares, na interpretação de gráficos de barras e na classificação das variáveis. Globalmente, o projeto foram positivos. O projeto contribuiu para o enriquecimento curricular dos alunos não só pela aquisição de novos conhecimentos na área da matemática ligados ao tema OTD, mas também pela diversidade de situações, experiências e vivências que as intervenções proporcionaram.

This project aims at identifying difficulties and constraints in a teaching approach to the Organization and Data Analysis in primary school. Therefore, the research questions are: 1) What difficulties do the students have when they are interpreting and representing results in tables, diagrams and graphics; e 2) What difficulties did I have when I was trying to find motivating activities related to the topic beforehand. From the methodological point of view, it included a quantitative approach and an Action-research methodology. Two intervention studies were conducted, one in the 1st cycle, with 25 students, and another one in the 2nd cycle, with 28 students, with similar characteristics. In the 1st Cycle, it was taken into consideration the diagrams of Venn and Carroll, the counting diagram (Tally Chart), drawing of tables of frequency, dot charts and pictograms. In the 2nd Cycle, tables of frequency, bar charts, pie charts, stem-and-leaf diagram, the mean, the classification of the variables, extremes and the amplitude of the data were explored. The results obtained in the 1st Cycle indicate that students had difficulties in interpreting data using the Carroll diagrams, in interpreting and drawing Venn‟s diagram and when they had to give the graphics a title. Nevertheless, they were able to analyse Carroll‟s diagrams, graphics and tables quite easily. The other group of participants presented difficulties in the creation of frequency tables and bar charts, in drawing and analysing stem-and-leaf diagrams and when they had to entitle the graphics. However, in the creation and the analysis of the pie charts and the classification of the variables, participants were able to perform the tasks without major problems. Generally, this research contributed to the curricular enrichment of the participants not only through the new knowledge acquired on the subject but also through the diversity of situations and experiences provided.
