As festas da confraria de Santa Cruz de Braga no século XVIII

Abstract

O estudo das festividades promovidas pela confraria de Santa Cruz de Braga no século XVIII, mostrou-nos uma instituição forte e bem organizada que se empenhava para que esses momentos se tornassem dignos de memória. A confraria promovia as festividades relacionadas com a sua invocação, nomeadamente, a “Santa Cruz”, o “Triunfo da Sagrada Cruz” e a “Exaltação da Santa Cruz”, assim como o Lausperene, Dia da Circuncisão (Primeiro de Janeiro) e as cerimónias quaresmais. Estudamos cada um destas festividades e ainda elementos como as procissões e os sermões, analisando a sua composição e preparação, pois estes adquiriam uma grande visibilidade. A instituição da confraria remonta ao século XVI, por devoção de Jerónimo de Portilho, mestre-escola que a fundou juntamente com os seus alunos. A instituição experimentou um grande crescimento que lhe permitiu a construção de um templo próprio, que se constitui como um dos símbolos barrocos da cidade de Braga. Fruto dessa crescimento e de elementos que afetam o desenvolvimento confraternal, na segunda metade do século XVIII, outras irmandades uniram-se à de Santa Cruz. As decisões relativas à organização da confraria e dos seus momentos festivos eram responsabilidade dos elementos da Mesa, que deviam agir mediante o estabelecido nos estatutos da instituição, deliberando acerca do que consideravam ser adequado para a promoção desses momentos. Em termos económicos, a confraria procede a gastos significativos com a promoção dos seus momentos festivos, procurando dotá-los de elementos que os engrandeçam e solenizem, bem ao gosto barroco.

The study of the festivities promoted it confraternity of Santa Cruz of Braga in the 18th century, showed a strong and well-organized institution that was bent so that these moments became worthy of memory. The confraternity promoted the festivities related with its invocation, particularly, the “Santa Cruz”, “Exaltation of the Holy Cross”, “Triumph of the Holy Cross”, as Lausperene, Day of Circumcision and the Lenten ceremonies. Studied each of these festivities and elements as the processions and sermons, analyzing your composition and preparation because it acquired a high profile. The institution of the confraternity dates back to the 16th century, by devotion, Jerónimo Portilho, schoolmaster, that he founded along with his students. The institution experimented a large growth which allowed the construction of a temple own which is one the symbols of the baroque city of Braga. Result of this growth and elements affecting growth confraternal, the second half of 18th century, other brotherhoods joined of the Santa Cruz. The decisions relatives the organization of the confraternity and its festive moments were the responsibility of the Table, they must act established by the statutes acting on the institution than considered to be appropriate to promote these moments. In economic terms the confraternity undertakes significant spending with the promotion of their festive moments, seeking to equip them with elements that magnify and solemnize, well the baroque style.
