This dissertation aims to evaluate the financial performance of investments in socially responsible companies. We aim to contribute to the literature on the possible positive/negative or neutral relationship between social responsibility and financial performance. To this purpose, we construct a portfolio of companies which are considered the most socially responsible ones by the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” ranking, published in the Corporate Responsibility Magazine. The performance of this portfolio is evaluated through several unconditional and conditional models (in order to consider time-varying risk). The empirical results show that there is no statistically significant abnormal performance of the socially responsible portfolio both in relation to the conventional benchmark and the socially responsible benchmark. We thereby conclude that there is a neutral relationship between social and financial performance, consistent with the results of Humphrey, Lee and Shen (2012) and Brzeszczynski and McIntosh (2014). |
