The reflexion and analysis object of this study consists of a critical approach to the representations of German Democratic Republic (GDR) authors in travel books and scientific-popular writings published in the context of political and cultural relations between that country and the emerging nations of Angola and Mozambique after decolonization. The GDR was a socialist state which was defined, among other characteristics, by the intense commitment to the cause of anti-imperialism and socialist internationalism. Therefore it is not surprising that after the decolonization of the Portuguese speaking countries (PALOP) numerous cooperation initiatives arose, between the GDR and many African countries which were considered highly important, like Mozambique and Angola. Simultaneously some authors of the GDR tried to report the social and cultural aspects of daily life in those countries by writing about their impressions of “missionary trips”. But the well-intentioned discourse of a supportive and egalitarian “real socialismo”, when read in defiance, obfuscated, in a subliminal way, cultural differences. The books in study, despite being different from each other and representing in fact many different perspectives, end all up revealing what we can call a peculiar “post-colonial vision of socialism”. The evaluation of the selected books (between 1975, when Angola and Mozambique gained their independence, and 1990, when the GDR was dissolved and integrated into West Germany), raises, in this context, several key issues. Since all cultural production in the GDR was also an inherently political act, how did the principles of anti-colonialism reflect in such publications, considering the fact that we are referring to a post-colonial period of time? Besides that, can the travel books and scientific-popular writings by authors from GDR contain hidden criticism to the official discourse of “socialist international friendship” and also criticize the regime between the lines? Finally, can the discourse of socialist internationalism in fact be considered eurocentric and chauvinistic? In the introduction to this study we explain briefly the meaning of the title, taking in consideration the particular context that involved the GDR's relations with Africa, specially marked by the “socialist slant” given to postcolonial visions, and justify its relevance. The following chapter in which the (post)colonial German issue is analysed stresses out the (short) memory of German Colonialism, the characterization of the (semi)sovereign State of the GDR and the motivations that led that country to consider the approach to Africa as a priority. In the third chapter we present, interpret and compare the books that constitute the group under review, with particular reference to the paradigmatic volumes of authors like Landolf Scherzer, Ursula Püschel and Jürgen Leskien. Considering the traditional bimedial (text and image) representation techniques used in this kind of literature, these formal and functional analyses of the texts are added in the fourth chapter, by an approach to the contents and the techniques present in the use of images. The fifth chapter closes the circle, by approaching authors and testimonies that emerged in the post reunification period, in order to corroborate the reasoning and examples presented previously. Finally, we refer to the conclusions that could be drawn from the study. |
