A matemática dos ritmos

Abstract

A abordagem da matemática e da música do ponto de vista da álgebra é algo que tem vindo a ser muito investigado. Recentemente foram introduzidos métodos na análise da teoria musical usando componentes topológicas. O presente trabalho pretende fazer uma pequena introdução de métodos geométricos e topológicos para a análise de ritmos. Inicialmente foi feita uma alusão à notação musical já que esta tese é do âmbito da matemática, mas em que o domínio de algumas noções básicas musicais devem ser tidas em conta. Serão analisados em detalhe seis ritmos escolhidos por serem representativos e resultarem de várias culturas. Para este estudo usaram-se várias formas de representar os ritmos (por histograma, box notation method, notação de colar e outros) e foram estudadas propriedades musicais, geométricas e topológicas.

The approach of mathematics and music from the point of view of algebra has been usual in the past years. Recently topological methods have been introduced in the study of some topics in musical theory. The main goal of the present work is to make a small introduction of geometric and topological methods for the analysis of rhythms. Since this is a thesis in mathematics and it is not assumed that the reader has basic knowledge in music, it is included a short introduction to the musical notation of rhythms. Six rhythms selected for being representative and resulting from various cultures will be analyzed in detail. For this study several forms of rhythms (by histogram, box notation method, paste notation and others) were used and musical, geometric and topological properties were studied.
