Uma (re)visão para além do olhar: a transposição para o cinema do Ensaio sobre a Cegueira de José Saramago

Abstract

O presente estudo propõe uma leitura crítica da adaptação fílmica, realizada por Fernando Meirelles, do romance Ensaio sobre a cegueira de José Saramago. A análise comparativa empreendida no nosso trabalho, procura evidenciar as relações dialógicas entre as duas formas de produção sígnica, a literária e a cinematográfica, incidindo sobre determinadas categorias da narrativa, encarada como prática discursiva que a literatura e o cinema partilham, clarificando as modificações formais decorrentes do processo de transposição. Pretendemos ainda salientar, no deslocamento da linguagem verbal para a linguagem audiovisual, como, entre os códigos específicos que compõem a tessitura do filme e dizem respeito à sua materialidade, a fotografia e a banda sonora desempenham um papel fulcral na recriação fílmica. Considerando as duas obras no seu todo, verificamos que configuram claramente estratégias distintas, visando proporcionar ao leitor e ao espectador, respetivamente, experiências de diferente natureza. Com efeito, na sua complexidade, a obra literária tem por finalidade suscitar a reflexão do leitor, levá-lo a assumir um posicionamento crítico face às questões que todo o enredo ficcional lhe coloca. Em contrapartida, sem elidir por completo o repto reflexivo que caracteriza o romance, a produção cinematográfica privilegia o envolvimento emocional do espectador, tendo por principal desiderato estimular a sua sensibilidade. A análise do processo de transposição procura demonstrar que, ainda que o realizador tenha subordinado os dispositivos narrativos e os recursos específicos do aparato técnico da arte cinematográfica à mobilização emocional do espetador, preservou a substância temática do livro e as suas principais linhas ideológicas.

The aim of this study is to propose a critical reading of the film Blindness, directed by Fernando Meirelles, which is an adaptation of the novel, Ensaio sobre a Cegueira by José Saramago. The comparative analysis undertaken in our work is an attempt to highlight the dialogic relationships between both forms of sign production; the literary and the cinematographic, which focus on the different narrative categories that literature and cinema share, by clarifying the formal changes arising from the process of transposition. In the displacement of the written language to the audio-visual language an attempt is also made to highlight the specific codes that are involved in the making of the film, concerning its materiality: photography and soundtrack play a central role in the film recreation. Taking into account the two works as a whole, one realizes clearly that they constitute different strategies, aiming to provide both the reader and the viewer with experiences of a different nature. Indeed in its complexity, the literary work aims to arise the reader’s reflection, inducing the reader to assume a critical position concerning the fictional plot he or she is faced with. On the other hand, and without eliding completely the call for reflection that characterizes the novel, the cinematographic production emphasizes the emotional involvement of the viewer. The scrutinizing of the process of transposition seeks to demonstrate that, even though the director has subordinated the narrative devices, the specific resources and technical apparatus of the cinematographic arte, to the viewer’s emotional involvement, the film recreation preserved the content and the main ideological line of the novel.
