A Preschool Oral Language Intervention for Language-Minority Children: A
Randomised Controlled Trial (POLILUX).
This investigation is one of the segments of the pre-test belonging to the project A Preschool Oral Language Intervention for Language Minority Children. A Randomised Controlled Trial (POLILUX). The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the language skills, in oral narratives and listening comprehension, in children of preschool age, in inclusive contexts, monolingual living in the northern region of Portugal and Luxembourg, whose first language is identified by their parents as the Portuguese language. The sample is 46 children living in Portugal with ages between 3 and 6 years old and 182 children living in Luxembourg aged between 4 and 5 years old. The Narrative Retelling Task, Portuguese version, that consists of two sub tasks, was applied. The results showed that: a) in the narrative retell sub task were analyzed the measures of mean length of utterance (MLU), total number of words (TNW) and different number of words (DNW), being observed evolution in the performance according to age in the sample of Portugal; b) in the listening comprehension sub task it was observed evolution in the performance according to the age in the sample of Portugal. The older children obtained superior results towards younger children. c) children aged 4 living in Luxembourg obtained similar results in MLU comparing to the children with same age children living in Portugal. In the remaining measures, the results were lower; d) the data of this study in children of all ages living in Portugal and in 4-year-old children of Luxembourg, confirm the data of MLU for the European Portuguese in similar studies. The contribution of this study for the knowledge of the use of narratives and of the listening comprehension as language assessment, in early ages and in different countries, showed the importance of risk prevention and early intervention in the language difficulties. |
