A literary subgenre whose first examples appeared in Germany at the end of the 18th Century, the Bildungsroman, or apprenticeship novel, manifests itself in the Portuguese literature of the 20th century in novels such as A via sinuosa (1918), by Aquilino Ribeiro, Nome de guerra (1938), by Almada Negreiros, and A noite e o riso (1969), by Nuno Bragança. This work focuses upon the feminine presence in these novels, outlining the roles played by women in masculine rearing. We divided the following research in two parts. The first one is dedicated to theoretical issues. After reflecting upon the concept of Bildungsroman, it deals with the presence of women in the forerunners of the apprenticeship novel and the place that studies about this subgender have devoted to her. Afterwards a brief outline is made concerning the presence of this novelistic form in the Portuguese literature of the last century. It is in the second part of this work that the above mentioned novels are studied in a transversal way. The first chapter verses on the image about women that they provide, which is intimately connected to the situation of women in Portugal in the 20th century. Then we analyse the substitution of the traditional figure of the master by those we call the subversive masters. The next chapter is about the mother figures in the three novels studied. They are small characters, because, as representatives of an order alien to the hero, they share the destiny of the canonical master. This chapter is followed by a section where the activity of the woman as a guide is studied, outlining her role in the sentimental education of the main characters, to which both the discovery of death and literary vocation are added in A noite e o riso. The present work concludes with a chapter on the end of the three novels, in which the separation of the lovers, provoked by death of women in Nome de guerra and A noite e o riso, and the ensuing loneliness of the main characters, herald a new beginning. |
