Expressões físicas da inclusão e exclusão dos judeus no urbanismo medieval, a partir do caso de Braga

Abstract

O objetivo deste trabalho é, a partir do caso de estudo da cidade de Braga, analisar as várias expressões físicas que permitem documentar a inclusão e/ou exclusão da comunidade hebraica no urbanismo medieval, desde finais do século XIV até à sua expulsão definitiva, decretada em 1496. Pretende-se, deste modo, examinar e cartografar a tipologia da propriedade afeta aos judeus, nomeadamente a emprazada, tendo em conta a sua localização no espaço urbano, de modo a contribuir para uma perspetiva topográfica evolutiva das vicissitudes da sua presença, onde se destaca, nomeadamente, o encerramento da antiga judiaria e a sua transferida para outro local da área urbana, no século XV. Para além dos dados referidos nas fontes escritas, esta abordagem valoriza igualmente a cartografia e iconografia histórica, assim como as evidências materiais que integram ainda o edificado histórico da cidade, nomeadamente o edifício pertencente à antiga sinagoga medieval de Braga. Assim, a partir da análise da Judiaria velha e a Judiaria nova mas também de alguns edifícios dispersos e diferenciados pelo tecido urbano onde os judeus viveram, discute-se a questão da inclusão e/ou exclusão da comunidade hebraica no urbanismo medieval, bem como o impacto da sua presença na morfologia e na topografia da cidade medieval.

The objective of this paper, from the case study of the city of Braga, is to analyse the various physical expressions that allow documenting the inclusion and / or exclusion of the Hebrew community in medieval urbanism from the end of the 14th century until its final expulsion, decreed in 1496. In this way, it is intended to examine and map the typology of the property that affects Jews, in particular the owned property, taking into account their location in urban space, in order to contribute to a topographical evolutionary perspective of the vicissitudes of their presence, namely the closure of the old Jewish quarter and its transfer to another location in the urban area in the 15th century. In addition to the data mentioned in the written sources, this approach also emphasizes historical cartography and iconography, as well as the material evidences that integrate the historical building of the city, namely the building belonging to the old medieval synagogue of Braga. Thus, the inclusion and / or exclusion of the Hebrew community in medieval urbanism is discussed from the analysis of the two Jewry’s, the old Jewry and the new Jewry, but also from some buildings scattered and differentiated by the urban fabric, where the Jews lived. Likewise, is discussed the impact of the Jews presence on the morphology and topography of the medieval city.
