| Resumo(s): | This presentation examines two particular philanthropic initiatives associated with three renowned Victorians: the Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts, Charles Dickens and Lady Henry (Isabel) Somerset. They are Urania Cottage (for fallen women) and Duxhurst Farm Colony (for female drunkards). It will be seen that by approaching the socially stigmatized issues of drunkenness and prostitution in a less punitive manner than was habitual, the way was paved for a more enlightened approach to what society categorized as personal failings. |
